Wesley A. Porter:
Wesley A. Porter, 89, of 4547 Shavers Creek Road, Petersburg, died at 6:58 a.m., Fri., Apr. 30, 2004, at his residence. Mr. Porter had been in failing health since September 2003.
Born Nov. 26, 1914, at his family's West Township home, he was the son of the late Vernon L. and Mabel (Bilger) Porter. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Stewart Nov. 24, 1937, at the bride's West Township residence. Mrs. Porter preceded him in death Feb. 21, 2003.
He is survived by one son, Vernon H. Porter, and his wife, Sandra (Shade), of West Township, Petersburg, RR 1; two grandchildren, Julie E. (Porter) Johns, and her husband, Rodney, of McConnellstown and Wesley E. Porter of Coal Township; and two great-grandchildren, Keith Johns and Andrea E. Johns.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Porter, formerly of State College and a long time Penn State University employee.
Mr. Porter was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, West Township. A former Sunday School teacher and longtime church organist, he also held numerous offices within the former Mooresville United Methodist Church.He was a former board member and chairman of the boards of Union National Bank and J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, both of Huntingdon. He was also a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks in Boalsburg.
He attended West Township public schools and graduated from Petersburg Vocational High School with the Class of 1932. He graduated from Penn State University with the Class of 1936 with a bachelor of arts degree in commerce and business.
Following high school, Mr. Porter was employed by the Atlantic States Gas Co. of Lancaster. Subsequently, he returned to Huntingdon and was employed by the J. C. Blair Co. and its successor companies: The Blair Division of Western Tablet & Stationery Co. and the Alexandria Division of Mead Corporation, from which he retired as general manger Jan. 1, 1975, after 35 years of service.
Mr. Porter enjoyed woodworking and gardening in his leisure hours. He was a skilled gunsmith and was an avid shooter and hunter. He resided at his West Township home from 1914 to 1937 and from 1948 until his death, for a total of 79 years.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tues., May 4, at the John B. Brown Funeral Home, 417 Washington St., Huntingdon, with the Rev. Joleen Willis officiating. Interment will be made in Mooresville Cemetery, West Township, Petersburg.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. until the hour of the service Tuesday.
