Harvey R. "Skip" Port, Sr., 76, of 555 Washington St., Petersburg, died at 10:05 pm Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at the Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College.
Born April 26, 1928 at his family home in Petersburg, he was the son of the late Walter W. and Mertie E. (Howell) Port. He married Alice M. Mitchell Dec. 24, 1947, at the Robertsdale Methodist Church parsonage. She survives at their residence.
Mr. Port is survived by a son and three daughters: Harvey R. Port, Jr. and his fiance, Kelly McMullin, and her daughter, Emily, of Alexandria; Christine C. MacEachern and her husband, Donald, of Petersburg; Marianne Sottile and her husband, Andrew, of Lititz; Emily M. Hess and her husband, David, of Alexandria.
Two sisters, Marian Gates of Huntingdon and Rachel Port of Petersburg, also survive along with three brothers, Jack Port and his wife, Joyce, of Mount Union; Kermit Port and his wife, Alma Jean, of Petersburg; and Dale Port of Hunitngdon.
Mr. Port is also survived by seven grandchildren: Jay Port, Amy Dubbs, Curtis MacEachern, Joelle Lightner and her husband, Richard, Aaron MacEachern, Michael Hess and Allison Hess.
Five great-grandchildren, Kiley, Jacob, Lucas, Reagan, and Maya, also survive.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold Port and John Port, and a sister, Anna Martha Rohland.
Mr. Port was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Petersburg.
He was a lifetime member of the Petersburg Volunteer Fire Co.
He was also a member of the Juniata Valley Senior Citizens organization and will be fondly remembered for his consistent generosity to the senior center. "Skip" and Alice's most recent donation of the property behind the senior center is, and will always, be genuinely appreciated by all of the current and future senior citizens in the Juniata Valley area.
Mr. Port graduated from the Petersburg Vocational High School.
Mr. Port served in the United States Army.
For 49 years, he owned and operated Port's Gulf / Port's Convenience Store in Petersburg, retiring in 2002.
He was a lifetime resident of Petersburg.
His interests revolved around his family, work, and community and he was especially fond of his grand-children and great-grandchildren.
He was a dedicated supporter of community, youth and school sports programs. He was also an avid hunter.
Private funeral services were held in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Petersburg.
